Well I've taken the plunge and started a website. I've had many positive comments about my photography, have been getting good marks in competition, won an exhibition and had a couple of images picked up by a magazine for their coverdisk (still working on getting in the pages). Getty had also requested some images from my Flickr Stream so I thought I'd have a go at setting up a platorm to showcase my work outside Flickr and also give an opportunity for visitors to purchase images too (without others taking a cut).
I'm not expecting to retire anytime soon on my photographic earnings, but everything helps offset the cost of equipment or travel etc as all amateurs will know.
I ran a couple of websites years ago when the web was in its infancy (yes I am that old), wow things have changed! I used to write the code for pages in notepad and upload it to get the site up and running. Now its so easy, tick boxes rule!!
The analytics that are available to see who is visiting which pages and from where are amazing (almost scary, if I can see so much with a free account what are the big players seeing!), so much more than just the hit counter I used to have.
The social media was not quite so easy to integrate but I think I got it working now, fascinating to see how all this stuff hangs together.
So how do I feel about going up against Professional Photographers am I taking food off their table by potentially selling amateur pictures? nah I don't think so, do you?
Have a look over at www.buyablephotos.co.uk and let me know what you think.
Peter.
